RESULTS FROM "THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN III"
WINTER 2006 TOURNAMENTS
On February 4, 2006, USKBA ACTION SPORTS Promoter Mark Negron (Black Mark Fight Productions) presented the "THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN" at world famous Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, NY. "THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN III - WINTER 2006 TOURNAMENTS" kicked off at 8:00 PM with 17 total contests under Freestyle Sambo™, San Da and Muay Thai rules. From the youngest to the oldest competitor, this event not only showed tremendous skill but also demonstrated indomitable spirit. As stated by fans and coaches alike, the matchmaking was superb.
The capacity crowd watched intently the extreme action in the best "BATTLE OF BROOKLYN" to date. It was definitely worth the cost of admission. Each competitor showed courage, respect and a never-quit attitude. At the end, every competitor was complimented for demonstrating the courage to step into the ring and for maintaining excellent sportsmanship both inside and outside of the ring. There was a wonderful air of camaraderie among all of the participants, coaches and spectators, perhaps captured best by Brooks Miller of One Spirit Muay Thai. He remarked that he had "to thank all the other coaches and their fighters at the event and that everyone behaved very professional around the ring, and very warm and friendly outside of it!" ![]() Another fighter and fight fan, Miguel Rivera commented that "the Sambo matches were off the hook - I had flashbacks of my grappling days, it was like watching two chess masters going at it." Indeed,"THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN" made great strides toward popularizing Sambo in America and abroad. With Sambo legend and 2-time world cup medallistKHASSAN BAIEV in the ring and many Sambo and wrestling legends ringside including: Ultimate Fighting veteran Viktor Tatarkin, Master of Sport Vladislav Koulikov, and Honored Coach Gene Fabrikant, this show really brought a new level of exposure to the sport. Importantly, the show is a great opportunity for well-known American Sambo players like Doug Fournet and up and coming domestic players like Ryan Ahern and Sherzod Voyidov to match grips with the likes of Baiev and each other. Much of the crowd had never seen live Sambo before and this event really demonstrated how exciting the sport can be. Most people these days only know Sambo because of MMA champions like Oleg Taktarov, Fyodor Emilianenko, Sergei Kharatonov, and Andrei Arlovski but, have never seen it live in action. At this time, "THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN" is the only amateur fight card in the United States to include Sambo as an event. It is really ground breaking and we hope it grows to the level of shows like the ZST grappling tournament in Japan. It is this ground-breaking flavor that attracted the Moscow Times, Grappling Magazine, Bout Review, and others to cover the event. In "THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN" Freestyle Sambo™ Elite Tournament; The semi final bout saw KHASSAN BAIEV defeated DOUG FOURNET by points (6-3). Baiev moved into the finals. The second semi final bout saw RYAN AHEARN defeat SHERZOD VOYIDOV by chest compression submission. Ahern moved onto the finals. In the finals, KHASSAN BAIEV defeated RYAN AHEARN by points (8-0), at the end of the 10-minute time limit. In "THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN" Muay Thai 84 kg Novice Tournament title final; BEN CASE defeated STEPHANE CLOUD by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).
