Team American Sambo debut at Grappler’s Quest
June 28, 2008
Team American Sambo Made its debut at the grappler’s quest nationals with members competing
in advanced divisions and the heavyweight pro division. TAS member Brian Benjamin of Ultimate
Sambo brought home the Bronze in Heavyweight advanced. Due to injuries, Reilly Bodycomb and
Ryan Ahearn could not compete. While the team may not have brought home as many medals
as we would have liked, we were grateful to be able to have such generous sponsors and for the
first time, bring together a national team. Carlos Cummings, Rodney Rappe’, Mike Franco, Doug
Fournet, and Scott Yockel fought their hearts out for the ASA! We’ll be back!

Team American Sambo Storms Grappler's Quest on June 28th!
May 1, 2008
America's Top Level Sambo Players will be entering the Men's Advanced Divisions and/or
Absolute Divisions on Saturday, June 28th in Morristown, New Jersey. This marks the first full
Team American Sambo to enter the World's Largest Grappling Tournament, Grapplers Quest.
The ASA was contacted by Brian Cimins and asked if we would enter Team American Sambo
in the advanced and/or absolute no-gi divisions on the 28th (not the 29th BJJ vs Sambo as
originally planned) at the Grappler’s Quest US Nationals. In both the ASA’s and Brian's opinions,
wins for TAS in the advanced and/or absolute divisions tournament would make much more of a statement for the TAS Grappler’s Quest debut than a single superfight team match; it will get our
fighters more matches and more exposure. So we have agreed to do this.
In addition, Grappler's Quest/Pro Elite will sponsor each TAS team member up to $150 for
registration fees, which allows us to allocate our Lockflow sponsorship for team travel costs,
etc. Furthermore, TAS winners will be eligable for the All Star Grappling Challenge in the evening
after the main tournament. Cimins has also agreed to cover our team's wins on the Grappler’s
Quest website.
The TAS roster for this event is as follows (subject to change):
140-149.9 lbs. - Reilly Bodycomb (New York Combat Sambo, NYC)
150-159.9 lbs. - Scott Yockel (Empire Academy, Rochester, NY)
160-169.9 lbs. - Ryan Ahearn (Ultimate Sambo, Florida, NY)
170-179.9 lbs. - Mike Franco (Brooklyn Wrestling Club, NYC)
180-189.9 lbs. - Rodney Rappe (Liberty Bell Judo/Sambo, Philly, PA)
190-199.9 lbs. - Oleg Savitsky (Red Bear Sambo Academy, NJ)
200-209.9 lbs. - Doug Fournet (Gladiator Academy, Baton Rouge, LA)
210 lbs. and over - Brian Benjamin (Ultimate Sambo, Florida, NY)
210 lbs. and over - Carlos Cummings (Cummings Combat Sambo, Panama City, Fla)
In addition to Grappler’s Quest/Pro Elite’s registration sponsorship, TAS has received generous
financial support from Lockflow.com, uniform sponsorship from Black Mark Fight Gear,
and Financial Support from the ASA.

February 28, 2008
Team American Sambo, under the direction of Stephen
Koepfer, has been asked to participate
in a team challenge
against the Grappler's Quest BJJ competition team, under
the direction of
Brian Cimins. Cimins, Grappler's Quest
president, has asked Koepfer to put together the best
possible team of American sambists for this event. It is
the hope of both Koepfer and Cimins that
this event will not only highlight the top up and coming US
grapplers in each style, but demonstrate
a true spirit
of camaraderie, friendship, and love of grappling.
The team challenge will take place on Sunday, June 29th, 2008 at the Grappler's Quest 2008
US Nationals
and Copa Atlantica. www.grapplers.com
Rules for the no-gi match will consist of two four minute periods. The first period will be submission
only, with no points being scored. If there is no submission by the end of period one, period two will
use the Grappler's Quest advanced division rules. The matches will consist of one grappler in the following weigh classes:
149.9 lbs. and under
150-159.9 lbs.
160-169.9 lbs.
170-179.9 lbs.
180-199 lbs.
200-219.9 lbs.
220 lbs. and over
The team members, currently under selection, will be anounced by mid April.

Team American Sambo Debuts at the Northeastern Grappling Challenge
January 13, 2008
The launching of Team American Sambo took place on January 13, 2008 at the North Eastern
Grappling Challenge. Team American Sambo competed in both the team and individual
tournaments.
The Team for this event will comprise of:
ASA Coaches:
Anthony Sansonetti
Stephen Koepfer
Grapplers:
Josh Alti (Team Renegade)
Reilly Bodycomb (New York Combat Sambo)
Jeremy Piaser (Team Renegade)
Doug Fournet (Gladiators Academy)
Anthony Sansonetti (Team Renegade)
Sean O’Brian (Team Renegade)
Congratulations to these team members on this inaugural Team American Sambo showing!
The team made a great showing for their debut! We placed a very close second in the team
tournament behind Team Bomb Squad (which included UFC fighter Tamden McCrory). The first
and second placing literally came down to one match that went the distance which we unfortunately
lost on points. In the team division we had 7W/3L vs. their 8W/2L. All our ASA Sambists who
represented! We were the only team who won all their matches via submission (in both the team
and individual tournaments). Be sure to check out videos from this event on our video page!
Additional congrats to Reilly Bodycomb (NYCS) and Jeremy Piaser (Renegade) who both went
undefeated at the tournament. Aside from our 2nd place finish in the team tournament, Jeremy
Piaser brought home a gold, Doug Fournet (Gladiators) brought home a silver, and Sean O’Brian (Renegade) brought home a silver in their respective advanced division individual tournaments.
